2026 World Cup Format

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will expand from 32 to 48 teams for the first time. The tournament will be held from June 11 to July 19, 2026, in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The 48 teams will be divided into 12 groups of four, playing a single round-robin format. The top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams will advance to the Round of 32. The Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Third-Place Match, and Final will all be single-elimination matches. If the score is tied after 90 minutes, extra time will be played. If the score is still tied after extra time, a penalty shootout will determine the winner. Group stage ranking rules: The rankings are determined by comparing the total points, goal difference, and total goals scored in the group stage in that order. If the first three are the same, the rankings are compared by comparing the total points, goal difference, and total goals scored in head-to-head matches. If the first six are the same, the rankings are compared by comparing fair play points (1. 1 point deducted for a yellow card; 2. 3 points deducted for a red card resulting from accumulated yellow cards; 3. 4 points deducted for a direct red card; 4. 5 points deducted if a player receives both a yellow card and a direct red card in a single match). If the rankings are still tied after all the above criteria, the FIFA organizing committee will draw lots to determine the group rankings.
